Cartmel Old Grammar Is Now Open for Lunch — And You Don’t Have to Stay the Night

Big news for food lovers and fans of low-key luxury in the Lakes: the doors to Cartmel Old Grammar’s elegant restaurant are now open to non-residents for lunch.

Newlyweds Lauren and Greg Foggo, who recently moved from Yorkshire to take the reins of this lovingly restored Grade II‑listed former grammar school, have opened the doors to non-residents for lunch. Their ambition? To blend local hospitality with luxurious comfort in a setting just steps from Cartmel Racecourse, creating a fresh, and very welcome, destination in the Lake District.

Until now, this beautifully restored 17th-century building, set just steps from Cartmel Racecourse has been a hidden haven for overnight guests only. But with its reputation for exceptional food, warm hospitality and stylish interiors spreading fast, the team has decided to share the magic a little wider. And trust us, this is more than just lunch, it’s a destination in itself.

A Lakeland Icon, Reimagined

Originally founded in 1624 as a boys’ grammar school, Cartmel Old Grammar has been lovingly transformed into one of the Lake District’s most elegant boutique hotels. Inside, it’s all soft tones, natural textures, and a gentle sense of quiet luxury — a perfect match for the charm of Cartmel village and the surrounding southern fells.

Begin in The Snug

Start your visit with a drink in The Snug – a cosy, fireside spot where you can sip on a local craft ale, nibble a homemade sausage roll and pick at plump olives. It’s an atmosphere that makes you want to press pause on the outside world.

The Restaurant: Now Serving a Standout Seasonal Lunch

Now open for lunch bookings from non-residents, the light-filled restaurant is a lesson in understated elegance. Every detail, from the crisp linens to the plate presentation, reflects the thoughtfulness you’d expect from a place with this much care behind it.

The lunch menu is seasonal, local and quietly impressive. Start with smoked mackerel pâté served with pickled cucumber and crumpet, or try the ricotta tortellini with fennel, cherry tomato and basil. The twice-baked cheese and leek soufflé with chicory jam is a must for those who lean savoury.

For mains, expect beautifully cooked fish, locally sourced meats, and inventive sides. The whole roast plaice in a clam and cider marinière sauce, paired with crispy crushed Jersey royals and marmite mayo, is a standout — and the dessert options are just as tempting.

Post-Lunch Peace and Views

After lunch, grab a throw and head outside to wander the private gardens. The views over Cartmel Racecourse and the gentle Lakeland landscape are reason enough to linger a little longer.

Stay the Night, If You Wish

Of course, if lunch turns into a late afternoon and you’re not ready to leave, twelve individually designed bedrooms are ready to welcome you upstairs. Each one blends character, comfort and calm in just the right measure – a luxurious overnight retreat in the heart of Cartmel.
