Sister Act The Musical comes to Walney Church following Forum Theatre closure

If you love a good musical, this is one to have on your radar…

This April, a church on Walney is being completely transformed for Sister Act The Musical, as Walney Musical Theatre bring the show to life in St Mary’s following the closure of Barrow-in-Furness’s Forum Theatre.

Instead of a traditional stage, the production is taking over the entire church space, with staging, lighting and a live band, creating a more immersive theatre experience.

The show itself is based on the much-loved film and has become a firm favourite on stage, known for its feel-good energy, standout songs and strong female-led cast. It brings together big musical numbers, recognisable moments and plenty of comedy throughout.

Bringing a production like this into a church setting adds another layer to it, with the space being used in full rather than separating the audience from the action. The aisles and layout of the building become part of the performance, giving it a more immersive feel while still keeping that classic theatre atmosphere.

It also reflects what is happening more widely across the local arts scene in Cumbria. The closure of the Forum Theatre in Barrow has been a big change for performers and audiences alike, but productions are still going ahead, just in different spaces. It is a shift that is seeing groups adapt and find new ways to keep theatre accessible within the area.

Walney Musical Theatre are well known locally for their productions, and this latest show continues that, bringing together local performers, live music and a full production team to create something that still feels like a complete theatre experience within a new setting.

For anyone who enjoys live theatre in the Lake District and surrounding areas, this is exactly the kind of event that keeps the local scene going. It is not just about the show itself, but about supporting the groups and people behind it, and making sure these kinds of productions continue to have a place.

The show runs from 21st to 25th April, with five nights and six performances in total, including two on the Saturday. With a limited run and a lot of interest already around it, it is expected to be a busy week of performances.

Tickets are already close to selling out, so if you are thinking of going, it is definitely one to book sooner rather than later.
