The Best Independent Bookshops in the Lake District

There is just something about the Lake District, isn’t there? The slower pace, the fresh air, the views that make you stop mid-walk. It is basically built for switching off and getting stuck into a good book.

So if you are a bit of a book lover, you are in the right place. The Lakes is packed with brilliant independent bookshops, each with its own personality, charm and shelves full of gems waiting to be discovered.

Whether you are after your next holiday read, a cosy corner to hide in for an hour, or just love a good browse, these are some of the best independent bookshops in the Lake District.

Freds Book Shop – Ambleside

Right in the heart of Ambleside, Fred’s Bookshop is one of those places you just have to pop into. It is small, cosy and absolutely packed with books in the best way possible.

You will find everything from fiction and non-fiction to walking guides and maps, which is ideal if you have come to the Lakes for the outdoors as well as a bit of reading time. There is also a great little children’s section upstairs.

It is the kind of shop where you go in for a quick look and end up staying way longer than planned. A proper independent bookshop that feels like it has always been there.

The Book Brewery – Ambleside

If you like your books with a side of coffee or even a glass of wine, The Book Brewery is your spot. It is a bookshop, café and wine bar all rolled into one, and it just works.

The space is modern but still cosy, with a really well curated selection of books. It is perfect if you want to slow things down for a bit, grab a drink and actually sit with your book rather than rushing off.

It is not just a shop either, it is more of a place to spend time. Easily one of the most unique bookshops in the Lake District.

Bookends Keswick

Over in Keswick, Bookends is a bit of a local favourite and for good reason. It has a wide mix of new and remaindered books, so there is always something interesting on the shelves.

Whether you are after a popular read or something a bit different, you will find plenty to choose from. It is also great for picking up gifts or something you did not even know you were looking for.

Friendly, well stocked and easy to get lost in for a while. Exactly what you want from a good bookshop.

Daisy Roots Grange-over-Sands

Daisy Roots is one of those hidden gems that feels like a proper find. Based in Grange-over-Sands, it focuses on second-hand books, which means every visit is a bit different.

Alongside the books, you will also find vinyl records, which adds to that slightly nostalgic, laid-back vibe. It is the kind of place where you can take your time, have a proper browse and maybe walk out with something completely unexpected.

If you love a second-hand bookshop, this one is well worth the trip.

Sam Read Bookseller – Grasmere

Set in the middle of Grasmere, Sam Read Bookseller is full of character and has that classic, traditional bookshop feel.

Inside, you will find a carefully chosen selection of books, including plenty of local interest titles, as well as a cosy children’s section. It is one of those places that just feels right in the Lake District.

It is calm, welcoming and perfect for a quiet browse. A proper stop-off if you are exploring Grasmere.

The Lake District is not short of incredible views, but it is also a bit of a dream for book lovers. These independent bookshops are full of personality and are just as worth visiting as any lake or fell.

So next time you are planning a trip, make a bit of time for a wander around one or two of these. Slow it down, have a browse and see what you find.

You will probably leave with a book you did not plan to buy… but that is kind of the point.
